The best Zero Hour maps are the ones that are fair to every start position, give a money level that suits how you like to play and are the right size for the number of players. For 1v1, start with the Tournament Desert variants such as TD Classic ZH v1; for 2v2, Maguso ZH v3 and Tournament A ZH v1; for bigger team games, Tournament C ZH v1 and Twister Land ZH v1.
Below are our picks for each mode, all taken from the community maps in our map directory, with a short note on why each one is worth a try.
What makes a Zero Hour map good?
Before the lists, it helps to know what to look for. Three things decide most games.
Money
Money in Zero Hour comes from what is placed on the map: Supply Docks, small supply piles and Oil Derricks, which add steady income once captured. In our directory, each map gets a money level worked out from these supplies per player:
| Money level | How games feel |
|---|---|
| Low | Every dollar counts. Smart building order and early map control decide the game. |
| Normal | About what a typical ranked map gives. A good middle ground. |
| Lots | Big armies, more generals' powers and more late-game units. Games often last longer. |
Low-money maps reward careful economy and early pressure. Lots-of-money maps are friendlier for newer players and for people who enjoy big battles.
Size
Small maps push fights early, so rushes and quick harassment work well. Large maps give room to expand, so you see more scouting, more air and artillery, and more fights over far-away supplies. For team games, a small map with many players gets busy very quickly.
Balance
A good competitive map gives every start position the same access to supplies, the same paths in and out, and similar tech buildings nearby. Many maps in our list have a "Balanced" or numbered version (v2, v3 and so on), because map makers adjusted them after players found problems. When you have the choice, the newest version is usually the one people play.
Best 1v1 maps
1v1 is where map balance matters most, so these picks are all marked Ranked in our directory.
| Map | Money | Why play it |
|---|---|---|
| TD Classic ZH v1 | Normal | A version of Tournament Desert, one of the most played Zero Hour maps. Medium size and fair. |
| TD NoBugs ZH v1 | Normal | Tournament Desert with fixes, for players who know the original well. |
| TD OpenMiddle ZH v1 | Normal | Tournament Desert with a more open centre, so armies meet sooner. |
| TD Winter ZH v2 | Lots | A snowy take on the same idea, with more money for bigger armies. |
| Lagoon ZH v5 | Normal | A medium map refined over several versions. |
| Natural Threats ZH v4 | Normal | Part of the newer set labelled 2024 pool in our directory. |
| Sand Serpent Balanced ZH v1 | Normal | A large map with room to expand, often seen in tournament map lists. |
| Barren Badlands Balanced ZH v2 | Normal | Another large tournament favourite, rebalanced. |
| Tournament in the Canyon vB | Lots | Medium size with plenty of money for fast tech. |
| Liquid Gold ZH v2 | Lots | A medium map for players who like bigger fights. |
| Winter Wolf Balanced ZH v1 | Low | Small and tight. Great practice for early-game control. |
| Scorched Earth ZH v3 | Low | Small, low money and fast. Mistakes are punished quickly. |
If you are new to 1v1, start with TD Classic or Lagoon: normal money and medium size leave room to learn. Once you are comfortable, try Winter Wolf or Scorched Earth to sharpen your build order.
Best 2v2 maps
In 2v2 you want both teams to have the same distance to each other and the same supplies, and partners close enough to help each other.
| Map | Money | Why play it |
|---|---|---|
| Maguso ZH v3 | Low | A small, fast 2v2 classic that has been updated more than once. |
| Mountain Path ZH v4 | Low | Small and tight, now at its fourth version. |
| Tournament A ZH v1 | Normal | A large 2v2 map with more room to expand. |
| Tournament D ZH v1 | Lots | A newer 2024 pool map with plenty of money. |
| Unity A ZH v2 | Low | Small and quick, good for team rushes. |
| Christmas ZH v3 | Low | A large winter map where low money makes every expansion matter. |
| FE NoBug ZH v1 | Low | Small, with fixes for known problems. |
Low money is common on 2v2 maps because two players share one side of the map. If your games feel too short, pick a Normal or Lots map such as Tournament A or Tournament D.
Best 3v3 and 4v4 maps
Big team games are where Zero Hour gets chaotic. A good map here keeps each player's base safe enough to build up, with clear front lines between teams.
3v3
| Map | Money | Why play it |
|---|---|---|
| Tournament C ZH v1 | Normal | A 2024 pool 3v3 map with normal money. |
| Tournament Graveyard ZH v2 | Low | A small 3v3 map with tight money. |
| Defcon Balanced ZH v1 | Normal | Six players on a small map. Also popular for free-for-all. |
| Coral Islands ZH v2 | Low | A large island map, where expansions and transport matter. |
| Territorial Dispute ZH v1 | Low | A small 3v3 map with constant fighting. |
4v4
| Map | Money | Why play it |
|---|---|---|
| Twister Land ZH v1 | Low | An 8-player classic with tight money. |
| Dusty Rampage ZH v1 | Low | Another 8-player map from the classic set. |
| Persian Gulf Conflict ZH v1 | Normal | A newer 2024 pool map with normal money. |
| Twisted Treeline ZH v1 | Lots | Plenty of money for huge 4v4 armies. |
Lobby hosts often set extra rules for big team games, such as banning certain superweapons. Our Pro Rules page lists the common rule sets players use.
Best FFA and fun maps
Free-for-all games need a map where no single player is trapped between two others. Six-player maps such as Defcon Balanced ZH v1 are a common choice for FFA lobbies.
For something lighter, the Fun maps in our directory are made for casual games rather than ranked play:
- [AOD] Cobalt Rush v2 - a small 5-player fun map.
- Mortal Temptation ZH v1 - a large 5-player fun map.
Always read the map description or ask the host before a fun map starts: many of them have their own rules built in.
How to get these maps
All of these maps are community-made. To install any of them by hand, put each map's folder into Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps and find it in the game under Unofficial Maps. Our step-by-step guide on how to install maps in Zero Hour covers the details and common problems.
If you want many maps at once, Generals Style can add them for you. In the Studio's Maps tab you can filter by mode and money, tick the maps you want and let your installer download them, check every file and skip the ones you already have. Read the maps guide for how it works; the maps pack comes with the Monthly and Yearly plans on the pricing page.
Whatever you choose, the best map is the one your group enjoys. Try a few from each list and keep the ones that give you close games.
