How to Install Maps in Zero Hour (2026 Step-by-Step Guide)

On this page

To install a map in Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour, copy the map's own folder (the one that holds the .map file) into Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps. If the Maps folder does not exist, create it. Restart the game, open Skirmish or host a game, click Select Map and choose Unofficial Maps: your new map is in that list.

That is the whole job. The rest of this guide explains each part, so you can fix things when a map refuses to appear.

Where is the Zero Hour Maps folder?

Zero Hour keeps custom maps in your Windows user folder, not in the game's install folder. The full path is:

Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps

This is the same for the Steam, EA app, Origin and CD versions, because the game always reads custom maps from your Documents folder.

To open it:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click Documents in the left panel.
  3. Open Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data.
  4. Open Maps.

Two things often catch people out:

  • OneDrive. If Windows backs up your Documents to OneDrive, the real path is something like C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Documents\.... Clicking Documents in File Explorer always takes you to the right place.
  • Generals vs Zero Hour. The original Generals uses a different folder, Command and Conquer Generals Data. Maps placed there do not show in Zero Hour.

What if the Maps folder doesn't exist?

The Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data folder is created the first time you start Zero Hour. If you have never launched the game, start it once, go to the main menu and quit.

The Maps folder inside it is not always created. If it is missing, make it yourself:

  1. Open Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data.
  2. Right-click an empty space, choose New → Folder.
  3. Name it exactly Maps.

What files does a Zero Hour map have?

Every map lives in its own folder, and the folder name matches the map's file name. A typical map looks like this:

File Needed? What it does
MapName.map Yes The map itself: terrain, start positions, supplies, buildings.
MapName.tga No The small preview picture shown when you select the map.
map.ini No Extra settings or objects the map maker added.
map.str No Text the map uses, such as names or messages.

Only the .map file is required. If a .tga, map.ini or map.str file came with the map, keep it in the same folder; some maps do not work properly without their map.ini.

So a correct install looks like:

...\Maps\Tournament Arena\Tournament Arena.map

How to install a custom map step by step

  1. Download the map from a site you trust. Most maps come as a .zip, .rar or .7z archive.
  2. Extract the archive with Windows or a tool such as 7-Zip. The game cannot read maps that are still zipped.
  3. Find the folder that holds the .map file. That folder is the one you copy.
  4. Copy that folder into Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps.
  5. Check for an extra level. Open the folder you just copied. You should see the .map file straight away, not another folder with the same name.
  6. Restart Zero Hour if it was running. The game reads the map list when it starts.
  7. Find the map: Skirmish (or Network / Online) → Select Map → Unofficial Maps.

If the archive held a loose .map file with no folder around it, make a folder with the same name as the .map file (without the .map ending) and put the file inside.

Where do custom maps show in the game?

The map selection window has two lists. Official Maps holds the maps that shipped with the game. Unofficial Maps holds everything in your Documents Maps folder. Custom maps never appear in the official list, so if you only look there it seems as if nothing was installed.

Custom maps work in:

  • Skirmish against the computer;
  • Network (LAN) games;
  • Online games, for example through community services. Our guide to playing Zero Hour online covers the options at the time of writing (November 2026).

In multiplayer, everyone in the lobby needs the same map. If a player does not have it, the game sends it to them before the match. For a smooth start, it helps when everyone installs the same version of the map in advance.

Common problems and how to fix them

The map does not show in Unofficial Maps

Go through this list in order:

  • Wrong folder. Maps placed in the game's install folder (for example under Steam or Program Files) are ignored. Use the Documents path above.
  • Generals folder instead of Zero Hour folder. Check that the path contains Zero Hour Data.
  • Nested folder. Maps\MapName\MapName\MapName.map does not work. Move the inner folder up one level.
  • Folder and file names do not match. The folder MapName should hold MapName.map.
  • Still archived. A .zip or .rar file inside Maps does nothing. Extract it first.
  • Game was already running. Quit and start Zero Hour again.

Some maps are missing when I have a lot of them

Players with large map collections report that the game's map list for hosting games stops at around 100 custom maps, so maps beyond that are not listed. Community tools such as GenTool, which can be installed through GenPatcher, are reported to raise this limit. The simplest fix is to keep only the maps you actually play. Our explainer on what GenPatcher does covers GenTool and the other fixes it installs.

The map crashes or will not load

  • The map may have been made for a mod and need that mod to load.
  • The download may be damaged. Download it again from the original source.
  • A map.ini that came with the map may be missing. Put it back next to the .map file.

Mismatch or problems in an online lobby

If a game ends with a mismatch soon after starting, the map is rarely the only cause; different game versions or mods are more common. Make sure everyone has the same map version, then read our Zero Hour mismatch fix guide.

Remove a map

Delete its folder from the Maps folder and restart the game. Nothing else on your PC needs to change.

The easy way: add many maps at once with Generals Style

If you would rather not hunt for downloads and check folder names, Generals Style can do it for you. In the Studio's Maps tab you can search about 295 community maps, filter them by mode (1v1 to 4v4, or Fun) and by money level, and tick the ones you want. Your installer then:

  • downloads each chosen map on your PC and checks every file;
  • puts each map in its own correctly named folder in Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps;
  • skips maps you already have and never overwrites your files;
  • shows which maps were added on your account page afterwards.

The maps pack comes with the Monthly and Yearly plans (see pricing). You can browse every map for free in the map directory, and our list of the best Zero Hour maps is a good place to start picking.

Whichever way you choose, the rule is the same: one folder per map, inside the Zero Hour Maps folder in Documents.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put maps for Generals Zero Hour?

In Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps, with each map in its own folder named like its .map file. Not in the game's install folder.

Why are my custom maps not showing in Zero Hour?

Usually the map is in the wrong folder, sits inside an extra nested folder, is still zipped, or you are looking at Official Maps instead of Unofficial Maps. Restart the game after adding maps.

Is the Maps folder the same for the Steam version?

Yes. The Steam, EA app, Origin and CD versions of Zero Hour all read custom maps from the same folder in Documents.

Do my friends need the map to play online?

Everyone in the lobby needs the same map. If someone does not have it, the game transfers it to them before the match starts.

Can I use Generals maps in Zero Hour?

They need to go into the Zero Hour Data folder, not the Generals one. Many maps were made for one game or the other, so test a map in Skirmish before hosting with it.

Make Zero Hour look and play your way

Design your control bar, loading screen, hotkeys and maps pack in the studio, then install it with one click.
