Zero Hour Mismatch Fix - Causes and How to Solve It (2026)

A mismatch in Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour happens when the players' games stop agreeing about what is happening in the match, so the game ends it. It is almost always caused by different game files on different PCs: another game version, an edited INI file, a mod, or a different copy of the map. The fix is to make every player's game files identical.
This guide explains how a mismatch works, the common causes, how to fix each one, and which changes are safe.
What is a mismatch in Zero Hour?
Zero Hour multiplayer is peer-to-peer. Each PC runs the whole battle on its own and sends only the players' commands to the others. Every game must compute exactly the same result from the same commands. The game regularly compares the results, and if they differ, it shows a message that it has detected a mismatch and stops the match.
So a mismatch is not a normal network error. Lag makes a game slow; a mismatch means the games disagree about the battle itself, for example how much damage a unit did or how much money a player has.
What causes a mismatch?
Different game versions or patches
The most common cause. Zero Hour has been sold as a CD release, in The First Decade, in the Ultimate Collection on Origin and the EA app, and on Steam, with different executables. If one player runs a different build or an older patch, the games will drift apart. Patch 1.04 is the long-standing standard for Zero Hour multiplayer.
Edited INI or game-rule files
Zero Hour's rules (unit costs, damage, speed, build times, camera limits) live in INI files, mainly packed in INIZH.big. Any change to those rules, even a "harmless" one, can make one game compute differently from the others. Loose files in the game's Data\INI folder count too, and so do leftover copies of game archives in the wrong folder. GenPatcher, for example, deletes a stray Data\INI\INIZH.big from Zero Hour installs.
Mods
Balance mods, total conversions and many "fix" packs change game rules. They work online only when every player has the exact same mod at the exact same version. One player with a mod and one without will mismatch.
Tools that change how the game runs
Speed, lag or "smooth play" tweaks, trainers and cheats change the simulation. Community reports also point to differences in tools such as GenTool between players. When in doubt, use the same versions of the same tools, ideally the ones GenPatcher installs.
Maps with different files
Two players can have a map with the same name but different contents, for example an older version of a community map. Each game then plays a slightly different map, which can mismatch. This often happens with popular maps that have several versions.
Network settings (less common)
A wrong IP address in the game's network settings usually stops you from joining at all rather than causing a mismatch. Some players do report mismatches fixed by correcting the IP lines in Options.ini, so it's worth checking if nothing else helps.
How to fix a mismatch step by step
Work through these in order and test after each step. Every player should do them, not just the one who "gets" the error, because a mismatch is shared by all.
- Verify the game files. In Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity. In the EA app, use the game's Repair option. This puts back original files.
- Run GenPatcher on every PC. It applies patch 1.04 and fixed executables where needed, removes known problem files and restores multiplayer compatibility between Steam and non-Steam installs. See GenPatcher explained.
- Remove mods, or match them exactly. Uninstall gameplay mods, or make sure everyone uses the same mod version from the same download.
- Clean out loose INI files. If you edited rules yourself, remove your loose files from Data\INI, or restore them from a backup.
- Use the same tools. Same GenTool version for everyone; no trainers, speed tweaks or "lag fix" files unless all players use the identical one.
- Re-download the map. If mismatches happen on one map only, delete your copy from Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps and let the host's game transfer it, or install the same version from the same source.
- Check your network IP. In the game's Options, or in Options.ini, make sure the IP lines point to your real network or VPN address, not 0.0.0.0.
- Last resort - clean reinstall. Uninstall, delete the leftover game folder, reinstall from Steam or the EA app and run GenPatcher again.
Quick reference - cause and fix
| Cause | Typical sign | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Different version or patch | Mismatch in every game with one player | Verify files, run GenPatcher on all PCs |
| Edited INI files | Mismatch after you changed unit rules | Remove loose INI files, verify files |
| Mods | Mismatch only with players without the mod | Same mod and version for all, or none |
| Tools or trainers | Mismatch soon after start | Same tool versions, no trainers |
| Different map files | Mismatch on one map only | Delete the map and get it again from the host |
| Network IP settings | Can't join, or rare mismatches | Fix the IP in Options or Options.ini |
What does NOT cause a mismatch?
Files that only change how the game looks or which keys you press don't change the battle, so they can't cause a mismatch:
- Pictures: control bar textures, loading screens, button pictures and icons.
- Button labels and hotkeys: the text file that holds button names and their hotkey letters (generals.csf). Changing which letter a button uses changes only how you give the order.
- Key bindings: the keyboard shortcut file (CommandMap.ini), for example making Tab select your next dozer.
This is why Generals Style is safe online. It changes only pictures, button labels and key bindings inside your own game files, never game rules. You can design your own control bar, hotkeys and Tab shortcuts and still play with players who use the original game. More answers are in our FAQ.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I get a mismatch with only one friend?
One of you has different game files. Compare game versions, mods and maps, then verify the game and run GenPatcher on both PCs.
Does GenPatcher fix mismatch errors?
Often, yes. It brings both games to the same patch, removes known problem files and restores compatibility between Steam and non-Steam copies. It can't fix a mismatch caused by a mod only one player has.
Can a custom control bar or hotkeys cause a mismatch?
No. Pictures, button labels and key bindings don't affect the battle. Only changes to game rules, versions, mods or map files do.
Is a mismatch caused by lag?
No. Lag slows the game; a mismatch means the games computed different results. Network problems usually stop you from joining instead.
Why does the mismatch happen on one map only?
Most likely the players have different versions of that map. Delete your copy and let the game transfer the host's version.
