How to Play Zero Hour Online in 2026 - Every Working Option

7 min read

On this page

At the time of writing (November 2026), the easiest way to play Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour online is Generals Online, a free community service with lobbies, Quick Match and relays that connect players without port forwarding. C&C Online retired its Generals and Zero Hour service in 2026 and points players to Generals Online. GameRanger and a virtual LAN such as Radmin VPN still work for private games with friends.

Online services for a game this old change often, so treat this guide as a snapshot and check each service's own site before you start.

What are the ways to play Zero Hour online?

Option Best for What you need Port forwarding
Generals Online Public lobbies and Quick Match Steam or EA app copy, a free sign-in with Steam, Discord or GameReplays Not needed (relays)
GameRanger Long-time community rooms GameRanger account and client, GenPatcher's GameRanger launcher Depends on your network
Radmin VPN (virtual LAN) Private games with friends Radmin VPN on every PC, the same game version Not needed

The original GameSpy servers closed in 2014, so every option here is run by the community, not by EA.

Before you start - get your game ready

Whatever service you pick, most failed connections come from the game itself, not the network. Do these first:

  1. Use a legitimate, up-to-date copy. Generals Online says it is developed and tested against the Steam and EA app versions.
  2. Run GenPatcher. It applies Zero Hour patch 1.04 and fixed executables if your copy needs them, can install GenTool, repairs common Windows 10 and 11 problems and restores multiplayer compatibility between Steam and non-Steam installs. Read GenPatcher explained for a walkthrough, or get it from its ModDB page.
  3. Start the game once from Steam or the EA app so its installation finishes.
  4. Make sure everyone in your group runs the same game version and the same mods. Different files are the main cause of the dreaded mismatch; see our mismatch fix guide.

If Zero Hour doesn't even start on your PC, fix that first with our Windows 11 fix guide.

How to play on Generals Online

Generals Online is a community rebuild of the game's online services. It runs on the community's fork of the source code EA released, the work of TheSuperHackers group. It has a lobby list, Quick Match, custom maps with map transfer and a player list. It is free to use and funded by donations.

  1. Download the Generals Online installer from its website.
  2. Run it and point it to Generals.exe in your Zero Hour folder.
  3. Start the game with the new desktop shortcut (or GeneralsOnlineZH.exe).
  4. Open the multiplayer menu and log in with Steam, Discord or GameReplays. The service uses OpenID, so it never sees your password.
  5. If Windows Firewall asks, allow the program to communicate.

A few things worth knowing:

  • It doesn't change your normal game. Generals Online is installed alongside it, and the standard game still runs as before.
  • No port forwarding, Radmin or GameRanger needed. Relays connect players who can't reach each other directly, and each pair of players uses the relay with the lowest latency.
  • GenTool, GenPatcher, custom UIs and custom control bars are allowed, according to the project's FAQ.
  • Updates install by themselves when you enter the multiplayer section.

If you want to know what the community expects in lobbies (superweapons, money, banned tactics), our Pro Rules page sums up the common rule sets.

What happened to C&C Online (Revora)?

For years, C&C Online was the standard way to play Zero Hour online. It needed a C&C Online account and GenTool. At the time of writing, its own FAQ says the service for Generals and Zero Hour was retired in 2026 and sends Zero Hour players to Generals Online. C&C Online still runs other C&C games.

Many older guides and videos still describe the C&C Online setup. If a guide tells you to register a Revora account for Zero Hour, it is out of date.

How to play Zero Hour on GameRanger

GameRanger is a long-running free client that lists Zero Hour among its supported games. It has been a home for Zero Hour rooms for many years.

  1. Install GameRanger and create an account.
  2. Run GenPatcher. It installs a proxy launcher so GameRanger can start Zero Hour, fixes GameRanger's Abort button and can add firewall entries for the game and GameRanger.
  3. In GameRanger, add Zero Hour to your games so it can start it.
  4. Join or host a room and start the game from there.

GameRanger has had outages in recent years, and its future has been discussed in the community. At the time of writing we can't confirm how active it is, so check its website before you invite friends.

How to play over a virtual LAN (Radmin VPN)

A virtual LAN makes PCs on the internet look like they are on the same home network, so you can use the game's own Network (LAN) mode. Radmin VPN is a popular free choice; Hamachi and ZeroTier work the same way.

  1. Everyone installs Radmin VPN.
  2. One player creates a network; the others join it with the network name and password.
  3. In Zero Hour, open Options and set the network IP to the address Radmin VPN shows for your PC. If you can't pick it there, the same setting is the IPAddress line in Options.ini inside Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data.
  4. One player hosts a game under Network; the others join it.

This needs no account anywhere, but everyone must have the same game version, and one slow connection slows the whole match.

Use GenPatcher's network fixes

GenPatcher has a Playing Online section with network optimizations that help you connect to other players. It can also add firewall rules for the game and GameRanger. If you can see lobbies but can't join games, run GenPatcher again, apply its online fixes and restart the PC.

Common connection problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause What to try
Can't see other players' games Firewall blocking the game, or the wrong IP chosen Allow the game in Windows Firewall, apply GenPatcher's network fixes, pick the right IP in Options
"Mismatch" during a match Players have different game files, versions or mods Same version and mods for everyone; see our mismatch guide
Stuck while joining a LAN game over VPN Game uses your normal network adapter, not the VPN Select the VPN address in Options or Options.ini
Missing map when joining You don't have the host's map Let the game transfer it, or install it before the match
Can't go online after a fresh install Fixes not applied yet Run GenPatcher, start the game once, try again
Game crashes when the match starts Old executable or Windows compatibility issue Run GenPatcher; check our Windows 11 fix guide

The game's network code uses IPv4 and peer-to-peer connections, so a strict router or company network can still block direct play. That's where relay-based services such as Generals Online help most.

Make your online setup your own

Many online players use custom hotkeys and a clearer control bar to play faster. Generals Style lets you design your own control bar, loading screen, hotkeys and Tab shortcuts and apply them with a one-time installer. It changes only pictures, button labels and key bindings, so it doesn't cause a mismatch, and it keeps GenPatcher and GenTool in place. Paid plans can also add a pack of community maps; browse them on the maps page.

Whatever you play on, keep your game files the same as your opponents', and Zero Hour online works well in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is C&C Online still working for Zero Hour?

At the time of writing, no. C&C Online's FAQ says it retired the Generals and Zero Hour service in 2026 and points players to Generals Online.

Is Generals Online free?

Yes. You need your own copy of the game, but the service itself is free and funded by donations for server costs.

Do I need GenTool to play online?

Not for Generals Online, which works with or without it. GenTool was required for C&C Online. GenPatcher still installs it, and many players keep it for its extra features.

Can Steam and EA app players play together?

Generals Online supports both. For LAN or GameRanger games, run GenPatcher on every PC, because it restores multiplayer compatibility between Steam and non-Steam installs.

Do custom control bars or hotkeys cause problems online?

No. Pictures, button labels and key bindings don't change game rules. Generals Online's FAQ also says custom UIs and control bars are fine.
