Generals Style

Troubleshooting - fix common installer and in-game problems

On this page

Most Generals Style problems come down to a few causes: the installer is looking in the wrong place, a part was skipped (usually because Control Bar Pro is missing), or another program replaced your files after the install. Find your problem below and follow the steps. If nothing helps, contact us and quote your installer ID.

The installer says it couldn't find Zero Hour

The installer looks for Steam, EA app, Origin and CD or The First Decade copies. If none is found, it shows "We couldn't find Zero Hour".

  1. Click Add another folder.
  2. Choose the folder that contains generals.exe for Zero Hour.
  3. The folder is accepted only if it also has the Zero Hour game files, such as INIZH.big and a language file like EnglishZH.big.

If your folder is refused, you probably picked the Generals folder instead of Zero Hour, or a shortcut folder. On Steam or the EA app, start the game once from the launcher so the installation finishes, then run the installer again.

Windows SmartScreen or antivirus warns about the installer

"Windows protected your PC" can appear for programs Windows has not seen on many PCs yet. If you downloaded the file yourself from your own account, click More info, check the file name starts with GeneralsStyle-Setup, then click Run anyway. Never run an installer someone else sent you.

If your antivirus locks a game file while the installer writes, that copy is put back from its backup and marked as not installed. Run the installer again; a failed run can be retried with the same installer. Close Zero Hour first, because the installer never writes while the game is running and will ask you to close it.

Nothing changed in the game

Check the result screen or My installers first. It lists every copy and every part, with a note when something was skipped.

  • Control bar skipped. The control bar style needs Control Bar Pro, which you install with GenPatcher. Install it, then make a new installer. Loading screens, hotkeys and Tab shortcuts work without it.
  • Wrong copy. If you have more than one Zero Hour (for example Steam and EA app), make sure you start the copy that was ticked on the "Game copies found" screen.
  • GenPatcher or a game update replaced files. Open Generals Style from the Start menu and click Re-apply my style. It works offline and needs no new installer. Files that are still yours show "Up to date".
  • Part not chosen. Tab shortcuts are off by default in the studio. A part you didn't tick is not installed.

Hotkeys or letters on buttons don't show

  • If GenPatcher's hotkey profile was found, the installer asked whether to use your Generals Style hotkeys or keep GenPatcher's. If you kept GenPatcher's, your hotkeys were not applied and the letters follow GenPatcher's keys. Switch at any time from Generals Style in the Start menu.
  • In a non-English game, a letter that isn't in the button's name is added like [R] instead of underlining a letter.
  • When one button picture is shared by buttons with different letters, the letter is skipped on that picture and listed in the report.
  • Two letters on a button, or letters with old keys: GenPatcher's "Show hotkey icons on the control bar" is on. Turn it off in GenPatcher (Additional Content → hotkey presets → untick → Apply). If you already installed your style, open Generals Style from the Start menu, choose Restore my original files, then run your installer again.

More detail is in the hotkeys guide.

Maps don't show in the game

  1. Open Skirmish, or host a game in Network or Online.
  2. Click Select Map and choose Unofficial Maps. Added maps are listed there by name, not under the official maps.
  3. Check the result screen or My installers for "added", "already on your PC" and "failed". Maps that failed can be added by making a new installer: maps you already have are skipped.

Maps come with the Monthly and Yearly plans, not the free trial. Players also report that Zero Hour can list only a limited number of maps, so with a very large collection some maps may not appear. Moving maps you don't play out of Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\Maps usually helps. See the maps guide.

How do I restore my original files?

Open Generals Style from the Start menu and click Restore my original files. Files from before the first install come back, and files the installer created are removed. If GenPatcher or a game update replaced a file in between, Restore leaves their newer version alone. Restore doesn't remove maps; delete their folders from the Maps folder if you want them gone.

My installer has expired or was already used

Message What to do
This installer has expired Open My installers and use Download again to get a new copy
This installer was already used Each installer works once on one PC. Make a new installer from the studio or My installers
This installer was already downloaded Each download works once. Use Download again; the earlier file stops working
No internet connection The first install needs the internet. Re-apply and Restore work offline

How installers count against your plan is explained in plans and billing.

How do I contact support?

Use the contact page. Include your installer ID from My installers and the short support code from the installer's result screen (it looks like GS-7FQ3K2-0412). We usually reply within one to two working days.

Frequently asked questions

Why was only one of my game copies styled?

Each copy is installed on its own. If one failed, for example because Windows denied permission, it was put back as it was and the others still installed. Run the installer again or make a new one.

Do I need a new installer after a GenPatcher update?

No. Use Re-apply my style from the Start menu. It applies your saved design on top of the new files, offline.

The game was open during the install. Is that a problem?

No. The installer waits and asks you to close Zero Hour, then continues with Try again. It never writes files while the game runs.

Can Generals Style cause a mismatch online?

No. It changes only pictures, button labels and key bindings, not game rules. See the mismatch fix guide for real causes.

Where are my backups kept?

On your PC, in the Generals Style folder inside your Windows user's local app data. Use Restore my original files instead of copying files by hand.

Make Zero Hour look and play your way

Design your control bar, loading screen, hotkeys and maps pack in the studio, then install it with one click.
